Grass grows at a rapid rate in the height of summer, which means you'll likely hear the whirring of lawnmowers most weekends.
But gardeners, especially with hayfever sufferers in their homes, could be missing a trick to stop the disrupted and unwanted trail of pollen from floating into their house, experts say. has shared the one thing that will help reduce pollen entering our homes and affecting our health - and it takes a matter of minutes.
As silly as it might sound, having your windows and patio doors open whilst mowing the lawn isn’t the best idea because it leads to grass clippings and debris entering your home, often without you knowing about it. The noise also amplifies a lot more when the windows are open.

While mowing the lawn undoubtedly kicks up a lot of pollen and increases the chances of pollen getting up people's noses, it's a task that cannot be ignored. Cutting the grass and keeping it at a short length will ensure that the production of pollen stays low. The experts said: “It’s key during season that you keep your lawn short, especially if you have a grass pollen allergy. “During peak growth, mowing your grass once a week should keep pollen in your garden production low. As a general rule, you shouldn’t remove more than a third of the grass height each time you mow your lawn.”
When is the best time to mow the grass?Mowing the lawn should also be done early in the morning or later in the evening when the sun isn’t as strong. It’s also important to get rid of any grass clippings to avoid them getting caught up by the wind and spreading the pollen. While being mindful of the mess caused by grass-clippings, it'll be nearly impossible to remove every strand of grass from your shoes and clothes.
So if you've been out tending to the lawn, it's best to remove footwear and get changed the moment you step foot inside. Grass 247 added: “You should collect your grass clippings and dispose of these in your garden waste bin or your compost.”
Garden waste bins, usually with a brown lid, require an annual fee to your local council to ensure they are collected. People are urged to check with their authority to apply, pay and get their wheelie bin on the list so it can be emptied regularly.
