Flight Disruptions Due to Closed Airspace
India's leading airline, IndiGo, has issued a travel advisory noting delays and extended flight durations due to the closure of airspace over Iran, Iraq, and surrounding regions.
In a statement posted on X, IndiGo said:
“Airspace over Iran and surrounding areas continues to be unavailable. Certain flight paths may need adjustments, leading to extended travel durations or delays. We recommend checking your flight status on our website or app before heading to the airport.”
Overview of the Ongoing Conflict
The advisories come in the wake of a significant military escalation in the Middle East. On Friday, Israel launched its most extensive military operation against Iran to date, targeting key nuclear facilities and killing several high-ranking officials and scientists.
Among those reported killed were:
- General Hossein Salami, commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard
- General Mohammad Bagheri, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces
- Six senior nuclear scientists
Iran retaliated with a barrage of missile and rocket attacks on Tel Aviv, and explosions were also reported in Jerusalem and several other cities. Israeli defense forces confirmed intercepting more than 100 drones launched by Iran.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, condemned the Israeli attacks as an act of war and accused Israel of targeting residential areas. In contrast, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the operation was aimed at dismantling Iran’s ruling regime and emphasized that the conflict was not with the Iranian people but with what he described as a “brutal dictatorship.”
The severity and scale of the strikes, as well as the casualties among senior Iranian leadership, have raised fears of a broader regional war involving multiple state and non-state actors.
