Twelve years after its unforgettable debut, ‘Raanjhanaa’ is making a return to the big screen. To celebrate the film’s 12th anniversary, an exclusive fan screening is set to take place on June 18 at PVR Lido in Mumbai.
Starring Dhanush, Sonam Kapoor, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, and Abhay Deol, the film has maintained a lasting emotional resonance thanks to its complex characters, timeless music, and poignant storytelling.
Raanjhanaa returns to big screens
The anniversary celebration won’t just be about reliving Kundan and Zoya’s journey. It will also offer fans a chance to meet the people who brought them to life. Director Aanand L Rai, writer Himanshu Sharma, actors Dhanush, Sonam Kapoor, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, and lyricist Irshad Kamil will be present at the screening. The event will be hosted by popular YouTuber and pop culture commentator Laksh Maheshwari.
Reflecting on the film’s emotional weight, director Aanand L Rai once said, “Even saying ‘I love you’ is an uphill task...Your hero dies, with his one-sided love? He dies a hero. What I love about my hero Kundan is that he dies happily for love.” He explained that while he could have written a different ending, it wouldn’t have suited Kundan’s character.
Rai recalled visiting Chandan Theatre in Mumbai post-release, where the gatekeeper insisted Kundan was in a coma and hoped for a sequel. “His face fell when I told him Kundan was not in a coma and that there would be no sequel... Everyone, except one columnist, seemed to have taken Kundan home,” he added.
About Raanjhanaa
Released in 2013, ‘Raanjhanaa’ told the story of Kundan, a Hindu boy from Benaras, who falls deeply in love with Zoya, a Muslim girl. Its exploration of one-sided love, heartbreak, and personal sacrifice continues to touch audiences even a decade later.
