While it might seem strange, there is actually a simple science behind the trick. Experts at have revealed exactly how it works and the results it can achieve. "This one seeks to stop the release of ethylene gas (or at least contain it) so that the fruit ripens more evenly and slowly," they revealed.
"I used a piece of heavy-duty foil and wrapped it tightly around the stems of the banana bunch."
Kitchen tin foil is found in most British homes and doesn't cost much when bought in the . In fact, it can be purchased in the likes of Waitrose for as little as 75p, in Tesco for £1.35, in Sainsbury's for 99p and in Asda for £1.20.
The experts who tested this method said that the bananas lasted longer than when they tried something similar with plastic clingfilm. "These bananas had just tiny flecks on the skins (as opposed to the medium and small spots of the others), with lots of unblemished yellow skin still showing," they said.
The added: "The flesh was more deeply sweet than the ones wrapped in plastic wrap and a little firmer, too (which I loved), with a little bit of resistance in each bite. I would happily enjoy these bananas as is."
