South Africa created history by winning the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) title for the very first time.
The final, played at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground, saw South Africa defeat Australia by five wickets, ending a 27-year-long wait for an ICC trophy—their last being the Champions Trophy in 1998.
Back on the Field Soon
Fresh off their WTC triumph, South Africa will be back in action in just a few weeks. The team, led by skipper Temba Bavuma, is set to tour Zimbabwe for a two-match Test series. The first match will be held in Bulawayo from June 28 to July 2, while the second Test will also take place in Bulawayo from July 6 to 10.
Although the Proteas will be back in whites, this series will not be a part of the World Test Championship cycle. Zimbabwe, being outside the full member group of the WTC structure, does not participate in the championship.
In a high-stakes final, Australia set South Africa a challenging target of 282 runs. But the Proteas chased it down in style, finishing at 285/5. Aiden Markram was the star of the show, smashing a magnificent 136 off 207 balls. He received crucial support from captain Bavuma, who played a composed innings of 66 off 134 deliveries, guiding South Africa to a landmark win.
"It has been a special couple of days, at some point, felt like we were back in South Africa with all the support in the stands. We have prepared hard for this, we have worked hard for this moment. We came here with a lot of belief but also with a lot of doubters and we are happy that we were able to play well enough to get that type of result."
"Special moment for us as a team, special moment for the people back home, probably will really sink in a couple of days but it's been special. The energy was there, we have been wanting this as a team, we have been kind of knocking at the door, being relentless, getting ourselves into positions where we can be in finals. We have gone through the heartache, we have gone through the disappointment, seen it with the past players who have come before us and the sun is on us at the moment," SA skipper said.
