Although June marks the start of the summer season, it can be a difficult time for hay fever sufferers. These allergies go on throughout the year, from tree pollen (winter-spring) to grass pollen (summer), and then weed pollen (autumn).

As there’s currently no cure for hay fever, it’s always best to take measures to minimise the exposure. According to gardening guru James Higgins from, nine out of ten hay fever sufferers are allergic to grass pollen, which is why he recommended tackling these immediately by planting these plants.
He explained: “Flowers that are pollinated by insects, such as bees and wasps, are a better choice for hayfever sufferers, as these produce less pollen and won’t release high amounts of pollen into your garden’s air - instead relying on insects to carry the pollen from flower to flower.”
If you’re a gardener lover but don’t want to deal with allergies, James recommended looking for plants, such as sunflowers, lavender or honeysuckle. However, if your allergies are life-threatening, you might want to start looking for other alternatives, such as artificial grass.

He warned: “In comparison, trees such as birch and oak should be avoided if you want to reduce your exposure to grass pollen.”
Avoid spending time outdoors or in the garden until later in the day, when the pollen is lower, by opting for afternoons rather than mornings or peak days. James said: "It's key to keep an eye on this as pollen counters can change based on the weather, wind and time of day."
Planting these three flowers not only will add a touch of colour to the garden but also ensure that the level of pollen stays minimised and away from you. Nonetheless, it's important to protect yourself whenever going out. So, if you're completing any gardening tasks, make sure to wear gloves, a long-sleeved shirt, and even a mask.
