Identification Efforts Underway Following Catastrophic Crash
Ahmedabad: Authorities have confirmed the identities of 31 victims from the devastating plane crash in Ahmedabad, with 12 bodies already returned to their families, as reported by Civil Hospital officials on Sunday.
The DNA testing process is still ongoing for the remaining victims, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, whose identification has yet to be established.
"We have successfully matched the DNA of 31 individuals, and 12 bodies have been sent back to their hometowns, including locations such as Udaipur, Vadodara, Kheda, Kushinagar, and Ahmedabad," stated Dr. Rajnish Patel, ADMS at Civil Hospital, during a press briefing.
"We are awaiting other families to come forward for the remains of their loved ones. The DNA results for the remaining individuals are still pending," he added.
Dr. Patel confirmed that the DNA analysis for former CM Vijay Rupani is still in progress.
"No matches have been found yet. We will notify the relevant authorities and family members as soon as a match is confirmed," he mentioned.
Additionally, 13 individuals are currently receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the incident.
The extensive identification process is being conducted by forensic teams from the state Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU), who are dedicated to assisting families in finding closure.
This process is crucial due to the severely burned and unrecognizable state of many bodies.
The tragic incident occurred on June 12, shortly after an Air India Boeing Dreamliner 787-8 took off from Ahmedabad airport, bound for London.
The aircraft lost control and crashed into a densely populated area near Civil Hospital and B.J. Medical College, resulting in over 260 fatalities, including both passengers and local residents.
Remarkably, one passenger survived the crash, albeit with injuries. The incident caused significant destruction in the surrounding area, particularly affecting medical hostels.
As a precautionary measure, hundreds of postgraduate resident doctors and their families were evacuated from the damaged structures.
In light of the disaster's magnitude, the government has mobilized 164 teams, including medical professionals, trauma specialists, and administrative personnel, across B.J. Medical College, the Trauma Centre, and postmortem facilities.
Authorities are working tirelessly around the clock to conduct relief, recovery, and identification operations with the utmost sensitivity and urgency.
