Celebrated filmmaker Atlee added another feather to his cap as he received an honorary doctorate from Sathyabama University in Chennai on Saturday evening. Marking this special occasion, the director addressed the gathering with a heartfelt speech in which he spoke not only about his upcoming mega project starring Allu Arjun and Deepika Padukone but also candidly responded to critics who often claim that his films are ‘copied’.
Atlee Responds to Criticism About His Films
Atlee did not shy away from addressing the long-standing perception that his stories borrow heavily from existing works. Speaking to the audience, he said, “Generally, there’s a perception that the films I make are taken from here or there. But let me tell you about my life today and give an example you can connect with.”
His comments come amid recent chatter about visual similarities between the first-look poster of his next film and the iconic sci-fi movie Dune.
To drive his point home, Atlee shared an anecdote about Vijay’s character Michael Rayappan from his 2019 blockbuster Bigil, saying, “Raayappan in Bigil was inspired by Jeppiaar sir, the founder and chancellor of this university. Today, when I got the doctorate and they played music from Mersal (2017), I believe I earned this only through honesty, only through love. I promise today that I will make this country proud.”
Atlee's upcoming project with Allu Arjun and Deepika Padukone
During the ceremony, Atlee also offered a glimpse into his highly anticipated film with Allu Arjun and Deepika Padukone. He revealed, “Kalanidhi Maran sir (of Sun Pictures) is producing this film. It’s one of the most expensive films to be made in our country. We will be using a lot of new technology to make it. I’m dreaming big, and the budget has yet to be locked. The producer will decide the release date.”
After months of speculation, it was officially announced in April that Allu Arjun’s next project after Pushpa will be directed by Atlee. In June, the film’s makers confirmed Deepika Padukone as the female lead, sending fans into a frenzy.
Allu Arjun himself congratulated the director on this milestone, writing on social media, “Big congratulations to @Atlee_dir garu on receiving the honorary doctorate. Really happy to see your passion and craft being celebrated at this level. Wishing you many more heights ahead.”
