Tarun Mansukhani’s Housefull 5 may have pulled audiences to theatres with its massive ensemble and laugh-out-loud gags, but it hasn’t come without controversy. The fifth installment of the blockbuster comedy franchise, starring Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan, Riteish Deshmukh and Chitrangda Singh, hit screens on June 6 with two alternate endings and a fair share of mixed reactions.
While the film continues to post decent numbers at the box office, it has also come under fire for its portrayal of women and use of sexist humour. Amid this, actress Chitrangda Singh, who plays one of the female leads, has addressed the criticism in a recent interview.
Chitrangda Singh Reacts to Housefull 5 Controversy
Speaking to Zoom, Chitrangda acknowledged that Housefull 5 might not be everyone’s cup of tea but maintained that the film is meant to be lighthearted and fun. “I do think Housefull 5 is a family entertainer. Yes, there are jokes and humour that people might not enjoy as much, but I feel every film has its own tone and metre of what the dialogues are and what the tone of the film is. This is that kind of film. Then there’s Hera Pheri, Golmaal and many more. Every film has its own metre when it comes to humour," she said.
She emphasised that Housefull 5 is a family entertainer and added, “If you go with your friends, you will have fun. Every family also has different dynamics. It is for you to go and find whether you like it or not. Everyone is entitled to have an opinion, I am not defending anything.”
Drawing comparisons to Hollywood comedies, the actress further said, “Adam Sandler’s You Don’t Mess with the Zohan and Pink Panther have a certain tone of humour. I don’t think it should be judged in the same manner. Every film can’t be an Airlift, and an Airlift can’t be a Housefull 5.”
The actress clarified that her intention wasn’t to defend the film, but to remind viewers that every film serves a different purpose in the entertainment ecosystem.
