Wikipedia has suddenly stopped the trial of its Artificial Intelligence (AI) based articles-lines. This decision was taken when experienced voluntary editors from all over the world raised serious objection to this feature. In this experiment on the mobile version, complex and long articles were being converted into short, understandable summary through AI.
However, this facility was introduced to help the common readers so that they can get information about a subject in a summary, but the editors say that this would hurt the editing system based on the reliability, accuracy and human inspection of Wikipedia.
Strict objection to editors
These summary made from AI were shown with a yellow unproven warning at the beginning of the article. But many senior editors reacted strongly to this. An editor said that this is not the one for which Wikipedia stands. He feared that such automatic summary may confuse readers and weaken the quality of Wikipedia. Editors believe that machine -borne content can cause subtle errors or misinterpretation of the subject, which only experienced human editors can catch.
‘Don’t repeat a mistake like Google’
Many Wikipedia contributors compared this feature to Google AI overview recently in controversies. Which was full of factual mistakes. The editors expressed concern that if Wikipedia adopted a similar model, it can cause deep damage to the credibility of the platform. In the online forum, the editors rejected this feature in words like ‘very bad thoughts’ and ‘hardcore protest’. Some even said that if AI content was given priority, they will stop contributing.
Wikimedia Foundation U-turn
Following the sharp reaction by the editors, the Wikimedia Foundation confirmed that the trial of AI summary has now been postponed. The organization in a statement admitted that the community did not have enough discussions before implementing this feature, which was a mistake. However, Wikimedia also clarified that AI will be used in future with complete transparency and active participation of the community.
Return of AI possible in future
The Wikimedia Foundation has indicated that the use of AI has not been completely rejected. If there is a need for any technical tool further, it will be implemented only under the consent and clear guidelines of the community.
