With ongoing political tensions between India and Pakistan, the future of the Asia Cup 2025 remains uncertain.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly reluctant to have Team India play against Pakistan, raising questions over the tournament’s viability. However, fresh reports suggest the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is considering hosting the tournament in the UAE to ensure participation from all teams.
Will India Play in Asia Cup 2025?
According to Forbes, the ACC is keen to conduct the tournament in the UAE, hoping to avoid political complications. While India is officially scheduled to host the tournament, the potential involvement of Pakistan may force a neutral venue. With PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi currently serving as ACC President, concerns around governance and participation have intensified. So far, the BCCI has not issued an official statement regarding Team India’s involvement.
The 2025 edition of the Asia Cup will be played in the T20 format, in preparation for the T20 World Cup 2026. In 2023, due to similar tensions, the Asia Cup was held under a hybrid model in Pakistan and Sri Lanka. This time, with India’s stance still unclear, ACC’s plan to shift the tournament entirely to the UAE may be the only viable option.
India delivered a commanding performance in the 2023 Asia Cup, clinching the title for a record-extending eighth time.
The tournament was played in a hybrid format, with matches held in Pakistan and Sri Lanka due to geopolitical concerns. Despite the logistical complexities, India emerged as the most consistent and dominant side.
Led by Rohit Sharma, the Men in Blue began their campaign with a rain-affected group match against Pakistan, which ended without a result. In their next group fixture, India comfortably defeated Nepal to book a place in the Super Four.
The high point of India’s Super Four journey came in the emphatic 228-run victory over Pakistan, where Virat Kohli and KL Rahul slammed centuries, and Kuldeep Yadav starred with the ball. India followed it up with a hard-fought win against Sri Lanka before losing a close encounter to Bangladesh in a dead rubber.
India reserved their best for the final. Facing Sri Lanka in Colombo, Mohammed Siraj produced a sensational spell, taking 6 wickets for 21 runs, dismantling the hosts for just 50. India chased down the target in 6.1 overs, winning by 10 wickets — their most dominant win in an Asia Cup final.
