Joe Root, one of the Fab Four and a modern-day great, continues to leave his mark on the red-ball format.

With consistent performances, the England batter is now within striking distance of a legendary feat — breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most runs in Test cricket.

Joe Root’s Test Journey So Far

Since making his Test debut against India on December 13, 2012, Joe Root has played 153 matches, scoring 13,006 runs in 279 innings at an average of 50.80.

His stellar record includes 36 centuries, 65 half-centuries, and 6 double centuries, with a top score of 262. He has remained not out 23 times, and his tally includes 1,397 fours and 45 sixes.

Widely regarded as the greatest batter of all time, Sachin Tendulkar played 200 Test matches, scoring a record 15,921 runs in 329 innings at an average of 53.28.

His career saw 51 centuries and 68 fifties, with a highest score of 248 not out*. He still holds the record for the most runs and centuries in Test cricket.

Root currently stands fifth on the all-time Test run-scorers list. The players ahead of him include Rahul Dravid (13,288), Jacques Kallis (13,289), Ricky Ponting (13,378), and Sachin Tendulkar (15,921). Root needs 2,916 more runs to surpass Sachin and become the highest run-scorer in Test history.

India and England are set to lock horns in a high-stakes five-match Test series starting June 20 at Headingley, Leeds, as part of the ICC World Test Championship 2025–27 cycle.

This battle marks another chapter in one of cricket's most enduring rivalries. India will aim to settle scores after their loss in the previous England tour, while the hosts look to continue their dominance at home.

With strong batting line-ups, potent pace attacks, and spin challenges on the cards, the series promises top-tier red-ball cricket.
