In a welcome move for Mumbai commuters, Mumbai Metro Line 1 will see improved services from June 16, 2025with all trains running the complete route between Ghatkopar and Versova and increased frequency during peak hours. The announcement was made via Mumbai Metro One’s official account on X.

The update comes after a temporary arrangement was introduced in March to handle growing congestion by running alternate trains only up to Andheri. That policy has now been reversed following operational assessments and passenger surveys.

What Prompted the Change?

Earlier this year, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) had initiated alternate train services terminating at Andheribased on data showing that 85% of commuters disembarked before Versova. This was aimed at improving turnaround times and managing heavy crowds between Ghatkopar and andheri.

However, after further review and commuter feedback, Mumbai Metro has decided to restore full-route operations for every trainwhile also increasing peak-hour frequency to better manage footfall and reduce platform congestion.

A Crucial Lifeline for Mumbai’s Commuters

Since its launch on June 8, 2014Mumbai Metro Line 1—connecting Versova, Andheri, And Ghatkopar—has played a vital role in facilitating east-west travel in the city. Spanning 11.8 kilometres with 12 stationsit was Mumbai’s first metro line and has clocked over 111 crore passenger journeys since inception.

According to Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL):

  • Ghatkopar station recorded the highest traffic with 30 crore travellers
  • Andheri station followed with 23 crore
  • Saki Naka saw 11 crore journeys

Currently, 5 to 6 lakh passengers use Line 1 dailyespecially during morning and evening rush hours. The restoration of full-route train services is expected to:

  • Ease long queues during peak times
  • Accelerate boarding and deboarding
  • Ensure timely arrivals for office-goers and students
  • Distribute footfall more evenly across stations

Commuter Benefits

The June 16 update directly addresses one of the city’s biggest challenges—congestion during peak hours. With trains now running the entire Ghatkopar-vesova route and operating more frequently, commuters can expect:

  • Shorter wait times
  • Reduced overcrowding on platforms
  • Improved travel reliability across the east-west corridor

This change reinforces Mumbai Metro One’s continued commitment to delivering a faster, more efficient public transport experience for the city.
