Bhikangaon (Madhya Pradesh): A large number of farmers had to return empty-handed from Krishi Seva Kendra, where they had gathered to obtain soya bean seeds available at subsidised rates here on Monday.

Farmers, hopeful of acquiring seeds worth Rs 2,200 for just Rs 600, faced disappointment due to limited stock available at the centre. Long queues of farmers were seen outside the Centre at 6 am.

Waiting for their turn amid scorching heat, some managed to secure seeds, many farmers were sent back with slips promising that they would get seeds on priority basis in next consignment.

Farmers had to return home frustrated and anxious as the monsoon had already arrived and they needed to sow seeds on priority.

Farmer Dharmendra Sejgaya said "I have been waiting since morning, but my turn hasn’t come yet. Will the weather wait for us?” Another farmer, Shantilal, criticised the lack of communication regarding the limited stock and raised question why the department did not inform farmers in advance.

Assistant agriculture development officer Ramlal More said that RVSM-1135 seed variety is being distributed to farmers under National Food Security Mission (NAMO) scheme.

He said that a total of 850 bags were distributed on June 12 and 13. However, only 200 bags were available to meet the demand of 400 farmers on Monday. He assured that the next consignment would be given to registered farmers.

Irked farmers demanded more transparency and timely distribution of seeds. They said that if farmers do not get seeds on time, it could severely impact sowing and overall production.

They urge the department to improve communication and transparency to ensure that all farmers can avail scheme's benefits on time.
