In an incident triggered by frustration over repeated power outages, two youths allegedly set fire to a substation office in Walgaon, Amravati district and reportedly attempted to attack the duty engineer with petrol. The incident has sparked tension in the area and led to the arrest of both accused. According to officials, residents of Revasa village had been without electricity since Friday night. Repeated attempts to contact the junior engineer and executive engineer reportedly failed, as their phones were switched off. With no answers from the authorities, a few villagers, enraged by the prolonged outage and lack of response, marched to the Valgaon electricity substation around 12 noon on Monday, as per local reports.
During the confrontation, one of the youths reportedly began recording the engineer on duty using a mobile phone. In retaliation, another youth poured petrol on the engineer. The engineer managed to escape in time, narrowly avoiding serious harm. The assailants then sprayed petrol on the office furniture and set a table ablaze, causing partial damage to the facility and disrupting operations temporarily.
A video of the incident has surfaced, showing the youths setting fire to the substation table. Authorities have taken the incident seriously, registering a case under multiple IPC sections including arson and obstruction of public service, as per reports.
The Valgaon Police have confirmed that two individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident. An investigation is underway to identify all those involved and determine the full extent of the damages.
Meanwhile, officials have urged citizens to refrain from violence and assured that all efforts are being made to restore power and address complaints through proper channels.
