Weather Update: On June 17, 2025, Delhi was hit by heavy rainfall, leading to severe waterlogging across multiple areas of the capital and the diversion of at least 12 flights at the Indira Gandhi International Airport. The intense downpour caused significant disruptions, including traffic congestion and flooded roads, while bringing relief from the scorching heat.
IMD Red Alert and Forecast: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Delhi and the NCR region on Tuesday, forecasting thunderstorms, hail, and gusty winds (50-70 km/h) in Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan. The IMD also predicted light to moderate rainfall at many places, with heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) at isolated spots in states like Bihar, East Rajasthan, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, North Interior Karnataka, Punjab, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and Uttarakhand. A moderate thunderstorm warning was also issued, urging residents to take precautions.
Monsoon Progress: The southwest monsoon has advanced further, covering additional parts of the North Arabian Sea, Gujarat, Vidarbha, Madhya Pradesh, most of Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, and Gangetic West Bengal. A low-pressure area over Southwest Bangladesh and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal is expected to move west-northwestward, intensifying over the next 24 hours, according to the IMD.
Impact and Advisories: The heavy rainfall caused waterlogging in key areas like Mahipalpur, ITO, and Delhi-Najafgarh Road, disrupting traffic and daily commutes. Videos showed vehicles struggling through flooded roads. Airlines such as IndiGo, SpiceJet, and Air India issued advisories, urging passengers to check flight statuses due to disruptions caused by the adverse weather. The IMD has advised residents to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and unplug electrical appliances to prevent damage from lightning surges.
Public Advisory: With the monsoon advancing and more showers expected, residents are urged to stay cautious, avoid waterlogged areas, and stay updated with IMD forecasts to ensure safety.
