Phone Conversation Between Modi and Trump
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a lengthy 35-minute phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh commented on this conversation but made a significant error that led him to issue an apology. He stated that President Trump had released a press note, highlighting a stark contrast between Trump's note and that of India's Foreign Secretary.
BJP's Response to Ramesh's Comments
Ramesh showcased a post from the White House, which prompted a backlash from the BJP. Amit Malviya, head of the BJP's IT cell, pointed out that Ramesh referenced an outdated U.S. readout from January 2025, while no new official statement had been released. Following this, Ramesh apologized, clarifying that he is not non-biological and acknowledged his mistake, asking for understanding regarding his statement.
Questions Raised About Modi's Silence
Ramesh remarked that President Trump had claimed 14 times that his mediation prevented a war between India and Pakistan, yet Modi remained silent for 37 days on this matter. He questioned Modi's silence following the G7 summit in Canada, where Trump and Modi spoke, and expressed concern over the timing of the recent phone call.
Triple Blow to India's Diplomacy
Ramesh asserted that India faced a 'triple blow' in diplomacy. He noted that Pakistani Field Marshal Asim Munir received an invitation to dine with President Trump at the White House, despite having made incendiary remarks related to a terrorist attack in Pahalgam. This invitation, according to Ramesh, represents a significant setback for Modi's diplomatic efforts.
Additionally, he mentioned that U.S. Central Command Chief Michael Kurilla used the term 'unprecedented' regarding Pakistan, contradicting India's stance that Pakistan is responsible for terrorism. Ramesh reiterated that Trump's claims about mediation went unchallenged by Modi for over a month.
Call for All-Party Meeting
Ramesh urged that the Foreign Secretary's comments should be addressed in an all-party meeting led by Modi. He expressed a desire for Modi to share the details of his conversation with Trump during a special parliamentary session, questioning why Modi seemed to avoid discussions on this topic.
He emphasized the importance of informing opposition leaders about the conversation upon Modi's return to India.
BJP Criticizes Ramesh's Statements
In response to Ramesh's remarks about the Modi-Trump conversation, the BJP's Amit Malviya labeled him as misleading. Malviya stated that Modi clearly communicated to Trump that India does not require third-party mediation and that tensions with Pakistan were reduced through DGMO channels at Pakistan's request.
He accused the Congress party of attempting to tarnish India's foreign policy, asserting that India is an emerging power and that no falsehood can diminish that reality.
