Moscow, June 18: Russia has issued stern warning against the United States and asked it not to support Israel in its military actions against Iran, as the fighting between the two countries continues into its sixth day.
On Wednesday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that if the U.S. gives direct military help to Israel, it could make the situation in the Middle East much worse. He said even thinking about such help could be dangerous.
“This would be a step that would radically destabilize the entire situation,” Ryabkov told Russian news agency Interfax.
He also said that the U.S. and Russia are in contact and are talking about the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict.
Israel Strikes Iran, Iran Strikes Back
Last Friday, Israel launched airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear sites, as well as on some scientists and senior military leaders. Russia called these attacks “unprovoked and illegal.”
In response, Iran has launched missiles and drones at Israeli cities over the past several days. This has created a dangerous situation in the region, with both countries attacking each other.
'Millimetres From Catastrophe’
Russia’s foreign ministry also warned that strikes on nuclear facilities have brought the region very close to disaster, just “millimetres away from catastrophe.”
Russia Calls for Peace
The head of Russia’s foreign intelligence agency, Sergei Naryshkin, said the situation is now critical. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin, who signed a partnership agreement with Iran earlier this year, has called for both sides to stop fighting.
On Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump said he wasn’t sure if the U.S. would attack Iran’s nuclear facilities, but noted that Iran now seemed open to negotiations.
Speaking to reporters outside the White House, Trump joked with a journalist who asked if a military strike was being planned. He replied, “I can’t tell you that, right? Do you really expect me to answer? ‘Are you going to strike Iran’s nuclear sites? And when exactly, sir? Can you let us know so we can watch?’”
Trump also said, “Maybe I will, maybe I won’t — no one knows what I’ll do. But I can tell you this: Iran is in serious trouble. Now they want to talk. I asked them, why didn’t you come to the table before all this war and destruction? You could’ve avoided this. You’d still have your country intact.”
