Deepak Kumar's New Venture Amidst Challenges
Deepak Kumar, a 22-year-old national-level athlete, has recently taken to selling sugarcane juice at the District Administrative complex's rear entrance.
As temperatures soar to around 44°C, Deepak engages with customers while promoting his juice, sharing his story with a local media outlet.
Hailing from the border village of Sabuana, he felt compelled to start this venture using his makeshift vehicle due to a lack of job opportunities and financial aid.
His vehicle is adorned with numerous medals, which pique the curiosity of passersby who often inquire about his achievements.
Deepak proudly recounts winning two silver medals: one in the 6,000 m cross-country event at the national games in Nagaland in 2022, and another in the 8 km cross-country race in 2023, organized by the Schools Federation of India.
Over the past six years, he has secured 16 gold medals across various athletics competitions, including the 1500 m and 5000 m races. Additionally, he has received five Khel Rattan Awards during the 'Khedan Vatan Punjab Dian' events hosted by the Punjab Government.
A graduate of Guru Nanak Dev University, Deepak has reached out to multiple officials in search of employment but has yet to find success.
He has also made a heartfelt appeal to the state government for financial assistance and job opportunities for athletes who have dedicated themselves to achieving significant milestones and bringing pride to the state.
