Fulfilling an important demand of government employees (Government Pension Announcement), the Central Government said that central employees covered under the Unified Pension Scheme will now be eligible for retirement and death gratuity benefits, as per the provisions of the Central Civil Services (Payment of Gratuity under National Pension System) Rules, 2021. The government said that this decision brings parity in retirement benefits.
Union Personnel Minister Jitendra Singh said that the new provision reflects the government's commitment to ensure social security for all categories of employees under the National Pension System.
It was a long-standing demand
A large section of government employees had been demanding this for a long time, now reacting to this, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh said that this move meets an important demand of government employees and brings parity in retirement benefits. He said that the new provision reflects the government's commitment to ensure social security of all categories of employees under the National Pension System.
Dr Jitendra Singh said, "For the first time since independence, a government has taken pride in eliminating unnecessary rules rather than making new ones." He cited the repeal of more than 1,600 archaic provisions - many of which are legacies of the colonial era.
Shiv Gopal Mishra, secretary of the National Council-Joint Consultative Machinery (NC-JCM), an organization that communicates between the central government and employees, said that if the government is saying this, we welcome it. But UPS and gratuity are two different things and are governed by different rules. When it was merged with UPS, we put forward our point of view. This decision was taken then.
