Malaysia has advanced 11 places in the 2025 World Competitiveness Ranking to reach the 23rd position, its highest place since 2020.

The rise underscores Malaysia’s path toward achieving its goal of becoming one of the world’s top 12 most competitive economies by 2033, according to the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry, as reported by state-owned media Named.

“Economic performance, government efficiency and business efficiency factors drove Malaysia’s overall competitiveness performance,” the ministry added.

Malaysia secured the fourth place globally in economic performance, climbing four spots from eighth last year. Both government efficiency and business efficiency factors each improved by eight positions.

The ranking highlighted that the international trade sub-factor surged 11 places to sixth, driven by robust export growth in goods and services, diversified markets, and increased tourism receipts, which bolstered Malaysia’s trade surplus.

The ministry expressed optimism that, with strong governance, sustained collaboration between federal and state governments, and close partnership with the private sector, Malaysia is well-positioned to rank among the world’s 12 most competitive economies by 2033.

The World Competitiveness Ranking, published annually by the Switzerland-based Institute for Management Development, assesses countries’ ability to foster a business-friendly environment that promotes long-term prosperity.
