Vodafone Idea (VI) has taken a big step towards strengthening the mobile network in India. The company has a strategic partnership with American satellite communication company AST Spacemobile. The purpose of this partnership is to deliver mobile connectivity to those far-flung areas, where there is still a huge shortage of network.
What is the specialty of AST spacemobile?
AST spacemobile is working on a unique technique that will be able to give a network directly on your mobile phone from space. The most important thing is that for this you will not need any special device or software – your current smartphone will be enough.
Successful trial of voice and video calls from space
VI has informed that AST spacemobile has recently created history by making the world’s first space-based voice and video calls. This call did not require any modified device, but from a normal mobile phone, a call was made from space.
In June 2023, the company achieved 4G download speed of more than 10 Mbps from space.
For the first time in September 2023, 5G voice calls were also successfully made.
In 2024, the company received investment from legendary companies like Google, AT & T, Verizon and Vodafone, as well as an important contracts from the US government.
When will this satellite service be launched in India?
Although VI has not yet announced the launch date of this new service, the company says that all the information will be shared when the time comes. Significantly, VI’s promoter company Vodafone Plc has already entered into an agreement with Ast Spacemobile.
What will be the benefit?
VI and AST Spacemobile together are preparing a system that:
4G and 5G services will be easily available in rural and border areas of India.
The direct satellite will provide voice calls, video calls, internet and streaming facilities.
There will be no extra device or antenna required for this.
India, an ideal market for AST
According to an AST spacemobile official, India is an ideal country where he can listen to his technology and existing telecom network.
Spacex compete
Meanwhile, Allen Musk’s company Spacex is also preparing to start Starlink Satellite Internet service in India. For this, she is interacting with big names like Jio and Airtel.
Recently, Starlink has also received a license from the Government of India. However, some telecom companies are unhappy with the government’s decision to distribute satellite spectrum without auction.
