Innovative Shift Towards Sustainability

In its commitment to sustainability, BMW is set to incorporate natural fibre composites into its production lineup. After extensive research and development, the BMW group has successfully created a range of natural fibre composites that meet the rigorous standards required for roof structures during homologation tests.

Collaboration with Bcomp

The lightweight composites, primarily made from flax-based materials, have been developed in partnership with Bcomp, a Swiss cleantech firm. This collaboration is expected to significantly lower CO2 emissions for the brand in the future. BMW has invested in Bcomp through its venture capital arm, BMW i Ventures.

Significant Reduction in CO2 Emissions Lowering Carbon Footprint

Utilizing natural fibres that contribute to reduced CO2 emissions is becoming increasingly vital. Testing has demonstrated that these composites are well-suited for both visible interior and exterior components.

By substituting traditional carbon fibre parts with these natural fibre composites in its upcoming models, BMW could achieve a remarkable 40% reduction in overall emissions.

Proven Strength in Motorsport

These innovative materials have already proven their durability, having been utilized by BMW M motorsport during the 2019 Formula E season. Similar components have since been integrated into the BMW M4 DTM and M4 GT4, replacing conventional carbon fibre parts. Since 2022, BMW has been an official partner for BMW M motorsport, particularly for the BMW M4 GT4.

These components will be tested for their resilience during the BMW GT4 24-hour race at Nürburgring, ensuring they can withstand impacts and mechanical stress. The collaboration with Bcomp will continue to influence future BMW M series vehicles.
