Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly predicted more centuries for India after India reached a commanding 359/3 on the opening day of the first Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Headingley, Leeds, on Friday.

Stellar centuries by Yashasvi Jaiswal (101) and Shubman Gill (127*) and a brilliant half-century by Rishabh Pant (65*) helped the visitors make a statement start of the series. Seeing this, Tendulkar was reminded of his 249-run partnership for the fourth wicket at the same ground in 2002 — a Test that India won.

Tendulkar hit a brilliant 303-ball 193 while Ganguly scored 128 and Rahul Dravid 148. The former asked his fans on X who could be the third centurion in the ongoing Test, after 23 years.

“A solid foundation laid by @klrahul and @ybj_19 enabled India to have a good day,” Tendulkar wrote on X. “Congratulations to Yashasvi and @ShubmanGill for their brilliant centuries. @RishabhPant17’s contribution was equally important for the team. India’s batting today reminded me of the Headingley Test in 2002, when Rahul, @SGanguly99, and I scored hundreds in the first innings, and we went on to win the Test. Today, Yashasvi and Shubman have done their part. Who will be the third centurion this time?” he added.

Ganguly replied promptly, saying that India might not stop at three centurions because this pitch was much better for batters than in 2002. He felt Pant could be the third, followed by Karun Nair — who’s returning to Test cricket after an eight-year-long interval.

“Hi, Champ…this time it could be 4..on this good surface…Pant and maybe Karun..the surface on day 1 in 2002..was a bit different than this,” said Ganguly in his post.

Tendulkar responded to it again, with a fingers-crossed emoji.

Ben Stokes won the toss and opted to bowl first. The move didn’t work for his team as the pitch settled after a few overs and Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul put up 91 runs for the first wicket.

Rahul and number three Sai Sudharsan quickly before lunch but Jaiswal and captain Gill took over relentlessly, scoring 129 runs together. Stokes made Jaiswal make a mistake and get bowled but Pant overturned the momentum again with his agression and took India to stumps with a 138-run stand.
