Embracing friendship, education and bravery, alumni Goregaon’s Vivek Vidyalaya sponsored school fees of 90 children of their alma mater, to commemorate the 25th martyrdom anniversary of their schoolmate. As a tribute to their friend, the alumni association resolved to support education of underprivileged students and send sweets for soldiers on festivals every year.
Vivek Alumni Association (VAA) of the Goregaon (W)-based Vivek Vidyalaya School and College came together on Thursday, June 19, to commemorate the 25th martyrdom anniversary of their schoolmate from 1991-batch Captain R. Subramanian, who went on to serve in the Indian Army. Popularly known as Captain Subra among his school friends, he and his troop were caught in an ambush while leading an anti-militancy operation in the Haphruda forest of the Kupwara district in Kashmir in 2000. While he successfully neutralised the militants, he succumbed to the serious wounds. He was posthumously awarded with ‘Kirti Chakra’ for his exceptional courage and supreme sacrifice.

On his 25th martyrdom anniversary, his schoolmates organised ‘Ujjwal Bhavishya’ to sponsor 90% of the annual academic fees of their alma mater’s 90 children, studying from Class-2 to Class-10. At a special gathering organised at Shree Ayyappa Temple in Bangur Nagar, cheques amounting to almost Rs5 lakh along with Krishna Tulsi plants were distributed by the association’s chairperson Jayashree Unni and former member of parliament Gopal Shetty, who attended the event as the chief guest, to the parents of the underprivileged students. A sum of Rs5,000 was also handed to Ashraya Children’s Home to support the cause of educating the children under the shelter’s care.

Capt. Subra’s parents were invited as honourable guests to grace the event. His father R. Ramachandran with his friends has been sending 15,000 boxes of sweets, every year during festive season, to the soldiers serving on the border. This year, VAA also joined the annual activity and contributed Rs50,000 to the martyr’s father. The association announced that it will organise the similar event every year on this exact date and sponsor education fees of children as well as contribute to send sweets to soldiers.
Shishir Vivekanand Shetty, the secretary of the association, said, “Our Association has long aspired to provide financial support to the parents of as many children at our school who come from humble backgrounds, including single mothers, housemaids, rickshaw drivers as well as street vendors, which has become a reality today due to the generous donations from our ex-students and other donors. We have further plans towards providing financial assistance towards senior citizens from our school for their medical expenses, facilitating infrastructure for sports and other relevant extracurricular activities for our current students at the school, being on the top list of our priorities.”
