The delay is a direct result of a recent and significant restructuring at the Sony-owned studio, which also saw the final expansion for Destiny 2 pushed back.
The decision follows a difficult period for Bungie, which recently laid off approximately 8% of its workforce, impacting around 100 employees. This internal shake-up has forced the developer to re-evaluate its production timelines for its two biggest upcoming projects.
Marathona modern take on Bungie’s classic 90s sci-fi shooter, is being developed as a futuristic, team-based “extraction shooter.” In this high-stakes player-vs-player (PvP) genre, teams of players enter a map to battle rivals and secure valuable loot, but they must successfully escape—or “extract”—to keep their winnings. Dying during a mission means losing everything gathered in that run, creating an intense, risk-reward gameplay loop. The game is planned for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
The restructuring has also affected Bungie’s current flagship title. The final expansion for Destiny 2titled The Final Shapewhich concludes a decade-long saga, has been moved from its original February 2024 launch and is now scheduled for release in June 2024.
These delays indicate that Bungie is reallocating resources and adjusting its roadmap to ensure both major releases meet the high quality standards expected by its massive fanbase, even as the studio navigates this challenging period of transition.
