A serving police officer has been found dead in what his colleagues have described as 'absolutely tragic' circumstances.

PC Charlie Mitchell, 26, a West Yorkshire Police officer, was reported missing from his Leeds home on Saturday night, with concerns raised about his welfare.

The search operation concentrated on St Aidan's Nature Reserve throughout Sunday, culminating in the heartbreaking discovery of PC Mitchell's body at approximately 5.30pm.

Charlie Mitchell's family were then notified that his body had been found, with the Yorkshire police force promising to provide them with "all the support" at this "very difficult time."

Assistant Chief Constable Robert McCoubrey expressed his deep sorrow, stating: "Charlie's death in these circumstances is absolutely tragic, and we offer our sincere condolences to his family and will be continuing to give them all the support we can at this very difficult time.

"His death has also come as a terrible shock to his colleagues in Calderdale District and the wider West Yorkshire Police family and we will be making sure that all necessary support is in place for everyone who worked with him or knew him."

Authorities have indicated that there appear to be no suspicious causes surrounding his death, and the Coroner's Office has been informed.

This tragedy comes just a day after news broke of another serving police officer being found dead. In the early hours of Saturday morning, Gloucestershire Constabulary's PC Ian Minett tragically died on duty due to an 'unexplained' death.

His colleagues were left 'devastated' upon receiving the news of his untimely demise.
