A taxi driver in South Korea is facing heavy criticism after allegedly making sexually inappropriate remarks to a Thai female tourist.
According to a video posted on TikTok last week by a Thai woman, her friend was verbally harassed by the driver during a taxi ride to Seoul Station, where she planned to board a KTX train to Busan, The Korea Herald reported.
Using a translation app, the driver allegedly asked intrusive personal questions such as “Do you have a boyfriend?” and “Why aren’t you married yet?”
When the tourist said she was heading to Busan, he reportedly replied, “If you don’t have money for the fare, you can pay with your body,” Nation Thailand reported.
Before dropping her off, he gave her his phone number and asked when she would return to Korea.
The video quickly went viral on social media, sparking outrage among Korean netizens.
Many condemned the driver’s actions, calling them “a disgrace to the country” and expressing concern that such incidents tarnish the reputation of other taxi drivers.
“As a Korean, I’m sincerely sorry,” one wrote.
Another added, “You came to Korea hoping to make good memories, but now you’re leaving with a traumatic experience.”
South Korea is generally considered a very safe country for tourists. Violent crime and sexual harrassment are rare, and the country has a low overall crime rate compared to many other developed nations.
