Every day inbox like Gmail has hundreds of promotional emails, fake job offers and feedback requests. To avoid this, we often press the ‘Unsubscribe’ button. But according to the report of The Wall Street Journal, every time this link is not real.
Clicked threat if you click
The report stated that scammer finds out through these fake links whether your email account is active or not. As soon as you click on the link, your activity tracks and the next fraud starts. This link can also give access to your device to criminals.
How does the scam game go on?
Cyber criminals put tracking code in these links. When the user clicks, the scammer finds out that the account is active and then the target scam is started. A report by DNSFILTER states that at least one link from every 644 ‘Unsubscribe’ link takes you to the harmful site, there is also a risk of the theft of email password.
Keep yourself safe in these ways
- Mark spam to those sending unknown emails, do not click.
- Do not press the Unsubscribe link until the sender is confident.
- Use a tool like Hide My Email that hides your identity.
- Keep the email app and antivirus updated.
