'Grandson Left Me Here': 60-Year-Old Woman Battling Skin Cancer Found In A Pile of Garbage in Mumbai

Mumbai: A 60-year-old woman battling cancer was found abandoned and lying in a pile of garbage in Mumbai’s Aarey Colony. The woman, identified as Yashoda Gaikwad, was allegedly dumped by her grandson and left to fend for herself in a severely weakened state.
The incident came to light on Saturday morning, when patrolling officers from Mumbai Police discovered the elderly woman lying in squalor near a roadside garbage dump. Gaikwad, who is suffering from skin cancer, was found barely conscious and extremely frail.
“She was unable to move and in a state of utter neglect. When we tried to speak with her, she told us her grandson had brought her here and left her,” said a police official familiar with the matter.
Despite being found in the morning, it took nearly the entire day to get her admitted to a hospital. Several hospitals reportedly refused to admit her, citing her condition and lack of clear identification. She was finally admitted to Cooper Hospital around 5:30 pm.
The delay in securing medical care for the ailing woman has raised concerns about the treatment of vulnerable elderly citizens, particularly those battling illness and without immediate family support.
Gaikwad, though weak, managed to provide two addresses to the police, one in Malad and another in Kandivali, believed to be linked to her relatives. The police are now investigating both leads, trying to trace her family and understand the circumstances that led to her abandonment.
A case has been registered, and police have circulated her photograph across multiple stations in a bid to locate her family members.
“It is heartbreaking to see an elderly woman, already suffering from a serious illness, left in such inhumane conditions,” said an officer from Aarey police station. “We are doing all we can to track down her relatives and ensure appropriate action is taken.”
The case has triggered outrage among locals and social media users, with many calling for stricter action against those who neglect or abandon their elderly family members. Meanwhile, Gaikwad remains under treatment at Cooper Hospital as the investigation continues.
