A recent survey has revealed that 1 out of every 2 consumers is paying convenience fees while purchasing products and services online. Not only this, 78% of consumers said that they would prefer those platforms that do not charge this additional fee. This survey was conducted by LocalCircles, in which the opinion of more than 40 thousand people from 321 districts was taken. Recently, Amazon India implemented a marketplace fee of ₹ 5 on every order, which will also apply to customers with Prime membership. Earlier, Blinkit, Zepto, BigBasket, Ajio, and many other companies have also started such a fee.

Many companies charge this fee due to delivery, packaging, or no minimum order. But this information is not given clearly to the customers in advance, due to which they are surprised at the time of payment. According to the 2022 guideline of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), convenience fees should be clearly stated and should only apply to specific payment methods. But most companies are not following this rule. Some consumers shared on social media that they had to pay additional fees of up to ₹ 2000 on services like school fees, and mobile bills, which they did not know about in advance.

Survey results
62% of consumers said that they had to pay convenience fees while booking tickets or services.
52% said that this fee was charged while purchasing most of the products.
78% said that they would prefer to choose a platform that does not charge this fee.
