ENG vs IND 2025: Why are players wearing black armbands on final day of Headingley Test? ( Source: BCCI/X)
Players from England and India wore black armbands prior to the commencement of the fifth day of the first Test match of the ongoing series and observed a minute’s silence in memory of former Indian cricketer, Dilip Doshi, who passed away at 77 on Monday, June 23.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) stood in solidarity with Doshi's family and mourned the passing away of one of Indian cricket's gems. President, Roger Binny, and Honorary Secretary, Devajit Saikia, made heartwarming remarks on Doshi and his legacy.
Speaking of how things were placed prior to the final day, England required 350 runs to take the lead, having all 10 of their wickets intact. They managed to stand resilient and not lose any wickets during the short six-over burst by the Indians right at the end of the fourth day. Zak Crawley (12 off 25) and Ben Duckett (nine off 11) stood firm to get their side to 21 for no loss.
The hosts came out to bat after India were bowled out for 364 in 94 overs in their second innings. There was nothing significant to show for them apart from the knocks played by KL Rahul (137 off 247) and Rishabh Pant (118 off 240) as Brydon Carse (3/80 in 19 overs) and Josh Tongue (3/72 in 18 overs) shared six wickets between themselves.
Much like the first innings, India's second innings also witnessed a collapse as they lost their last six wickets with negligible contribution to the scoreboard, being dismissed for 364 to set a 371-run target for the hosts.
