England had been cruising in their pursuit of a 371-run target, thanks to a brilliant opening partnership of 188 runs between Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley.
Duckett, in particular, was in imperious form, having already reached a superb century and continuing to frustrate the Indian bowlers. But just when the visitors looked out of ideas, Shardul Thakur stepped up with a crucial breakthrough.
His first victim was Duckett, who had looked set for a match-winning knock.
Thakur bowled a well-directed delivery that Duckett tried to flick off his pads but was caught behind. The dismissal triggered loud celebrations from the Indian camp, as it marked the end of a marathon innings. On the very next delivery, Thakur struck again—this time removing Harry Brook for a golden duck. Brook, trying to defend a sharp delivery, edged it straight to the slips.
India roars back into contest
