Arsenal’s slow approach towards signing a striker in the summer transfer window is causing dissent, with Piers Morgan expressing the feelings of many tetchy fans. The Gunners are in the market for a centre-forward this summer but are yet to make any significant breakthroughs – much to the annoyance of their supporters.
Mirror Football understands that RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres and Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins are all in the mix. Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta is the man with the burden of landing the striker Mikel Arteta has been missing after three successive second-place finishes in the Premier League.
But while a £51million deal has been rubber-stamped for midfielder Martin Zubimendi and Kepa Arrizabalaga is set to become their new second-choice goalkeeper, the exciting new striker is yet to emerge. News came on Wednesday that the Gunners have bid £9.3m for Brentford captain Christian Norgaard, but it will do little to quell the unrest brewing in the fanbase.
Despite the transfer window remaining open until September 1, Morgan is raging that Arsenal haven’t wrapped up a deal for Gyokeres. Reacting to reports that Liverpool have now joined the race for the Swede, he tweeted: “Arsenal’s ongoing failure to sign a striker is inexplicable. What the hell are you waiting for, @m8arteta ????”

The report in question, from Portuguese outlet Correio da Manha, stated that Liverpool are now targeting Gyokeres as a potential replacement for Darwin Nunez, who has agreed to join Napoli. The Reds are reportedly ready to discuss a fee for Gyokeres, with Sporting demanding €80m (£68.1m).
Gyokeres’ exit from Sporting has turned sour in recent days, with the 27-year-old unhappy at the club putting the brakes on his transfer. He has reportedly stated that he will never play again for Sporting and won’t turn up for pre-season training, in an attempt to speed up his exit.
Sporting president Frederico Varandas has hit back at Gyokeres’ agent, stating: “Threats, blackmail and insults don’t work with me. I can guarantee that Viktor Gyokeres will not leave for €60m plus €10m [£51m plus £8.5m] because I never promised him that. This game that the agent is playing only makes the situation worse.”

Arsenal and Manchester United have both been linked with the former Coventry City goal machine, but both have other targets too. The Gunners saw a bid worth €55m (£46.8m) plus a further €10m (£8.5m) in add-ons rejected by Sporting and are yet to return with another bid.
They have been in negotiations with RB Leipzig over a fee for Sesko, but have grown frustrated with the slowness of those talks too. Meanwhile, they are looking at other targets, with Ajax’s versatile defender Jorrel Hato and Real Madrid forward Rodrygo among them.
