Shubman Gill had a tricky beginning in his Test captaincy stint when the Indian side lost by five wickets in the first Test under his leadership. Captaining the side in the match against England at Leeds on June 20 the 25 years old right-handed smacked a brilliant 147 run contribution in the first innings. Still he tried but it was not enough to win. India made England to chase 371 runs in the fourth innings a target that was achieved in 82 overs with a spectacular 149 by Ben Duckett. After India lost the first Test of the five match series against the England Shubman Gill became a member of an unwanted club as well. He became the third Indian captain after Virat Kohli and Dilip Vengsarkar to score a hundred on their debut Test as a captain and be on the losing side. Dilips first Test match as captain of India was in November 1987 against West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium when he scored a hundred in the second innings (102). However this was not enough to help India win the match and the team lost by five wickets. Virat Kohli started Test captaincy career with a century (115) against Australia in the first innings and a century (141) on the second innings of the Adelaide Test in December 2014. But his amazing performance was not sufficient as India failed to deliver and lost the match by 48 runs. There were four Indian batters Yashasvi Jaiswal Shubman Gill Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul who scored a century during the Leeds Test and yet despite five individual centuries India found themselves on the wrong side of the result. The second Test is scheduled to take place at Birmingham from July 2 to 6.
