Call the Midwife bosses have decided they want the long-running medical drama, based in London, to "go out on a high", it has been claimed. The well-loved show's 15th run which airs in 2026 will be its last series on television the Daily Star reports. It will then have a final outing with its movie spin-off on the big screen.

The climax will mark the end of an era in British TV and be heartbreaking for the programme's millions of loyal viewers who have been following the drama at Nonnatus House for more than a decade.

An insider said: "After years of drama and countless births, Call the Midwife is coming to an end. The team have decided it's time to draw the show to a close and bow out. This is the last we'll see of these much-loved characters. Storylines will tie up a lot of loose ends."

The final series, once again written by Heidi Thomas, is currently being filmed and cast members have reportedly been emotional on set.

The insider added: "It's a bittersweet time for the cast and crew. They're all sad it's coming to an end, but they want to make sure the show gets the ending it deserves."

Call the Midwife will be replaced in the schedules by its forthcoming prequel series, so fans can still get their fix.

The spin-off will be set during the Second World War and feature younger versions of much-loved characters.

The BBC has been contacted by Express.co.uk for comment.

BBC bosses are allegedly hoping it will become as popular as Call the Midwife, which draws in millions of viewers, especially at Christmas, for its seasonal special.

The insider said: "The prequel series will be very different to Call the Midwife, but it will still have the same magic.

"The storylines will be inspired by true events, and there will be some fantastic new characters for viewers to fall in love with.

"The writers are also open to the idea of reviving Call the Midwife for a special one day in the future. It's a case of never say never."

Call the Midwife has become one of the most popular dramas in TV history since launching in 2012.

The series, which stars Helen George, Jenny Agutter, and Stephen McGann, has won at the BAFTAs, TV Choice Awards, and National Television Awards.

On Tuesday, the show won at the Television and Radio Industries Club Awards.
