The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has confirmed that there are no plans to introduce toll charges for two-wheelers.
This clarification comes after some media reports claimed that two-wheelers might soon have to pay tolls on national highways.
In a strong statement, the NHAI stated that no such proposal is under review or consideration by the Government of India.
Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari, also took to social media platform X to address the confusion. He said, “Some media houses are spreading misleading news about imposing toll tax on two-wheeler vehicles. No such decision has been proposed. The exemption on toll for two-wheeler vehicles will continue fully.”
He further criticised the spread of misinformation, calling it an example of unhealthy journalism.
No Changes from July 15
There were earlier reports suggesting that tolls for two-wheelers would start from July 15, 2025, and that the FASTag exemption for two-wheelers might be removed. However, the government has now officially denied any such move.
Currently, two-wheelers do not pay toll on national highways and are also restricted from entering certain expressways like the Mumbai–Pune and Vadodara–Ahmedabad routes.
This toll-free policy was introduced to support low-income commuters and reduce congestion at toll plazas.
New FASTag Annual Pass for Private Vehicles
While two-wheelers remain exempt, the government has introduced a new FASTag-based annual pass for private vehicles like cars, jeeps, and vans. From August 15, this pass will be available at Rs 3,000, valid for up to 200 trips or one year, whichever is earlier.
Users can activate or renew their pass using the Rajmarg Yatra App or via the official NHAI and MoRTH websites.
