The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is working towards making the use of FASTag easier and feasible across the country. Now the ministry wants the use of FASTag not to be limited to toll payment only, but it should also be used in services like charging electric vehicles, parking fees, and vehicle insurance. This will not only provide more convenience to the common people but will also increase the transparency of digital transactions.
Everyone will benefit
For this purpose, Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), which works under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), held an important meeting with fintech companies. Issues like alternative use of FASTag, rules and regulations, customer complaints, and data security were discussed in the meeting. The ministry said in a statement that using FASTag for services other than toll would be very beneficial for the people and this will further expand this technology.
What is a Multi-Lane Free Flow Tolling System?
Another main objective of this meeting was to introduce fintech companies to the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system. Under this technology, vehicles do not need to stop at the toll booth. With the help of an RFID reader and ANPR cameras, the vehicle is identified and the payment is automatically deducted from the Fastag.
Current status of Fastag
Currently, under the NETC Fastag program, this facility is active at 1728 toll plazas across the country, which includes 1113 national highways and 615 state highways. About 98.5% of toll payments are being made through Fastag. So far, more than 11.04 crore Fastags have been issued, which are available through more than 38 banks.
Fastag will become a super platform for mobility.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said that the Fastag system has a lot of potential. He said, we want to make Fastag not just a means of toll payment but also a means of seamless and smart travel across the country. Gadkari also said that the ministry, in collaboration with fintech companies, technology experts and other stakeholders, wants to transform Fastag into a multi-functional digital platform, which will not only facilitate travel but will also bring a digital revolution in the transport sector.
