Joe Root is on the cusp of a historic milestone heading into the second Test against India at Edgbaston, Birmingham.
New Delhi: India was routed in the five-wicket loss against England in the first Test, despite scoring five centuries at Headingley, Leeds. They found themselves in dominant positions on several occasions but failed to capitalise on them.
It seemed 371 was a challenging target on paper, but England made it look so easy on a flat pitch against an Indian bowling attack that was in disarray. Ben Duckett was the real star with a brilliant 149 to make England go near the triumph while Joe Root came up with a reliable half-century to steer the hosts to a win.
Joe Root simply has been a headache to this Indian team and unless they find a way to get him out without getting into any issues, especially on dead tracks, he will make them suffer all through the series.
Big milestone waiting for Joe Root
Joe Root is on the verge of creating history against India in the second Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham. Having starred in 2,927 Test encounters against India so far, Root is on the verge of illegitimizing the status of becoming the first player in the history to hit the 3000-run mark verses India in the format by requiring 73 more runs. He has also achieved the maximum runs in Test cricket against India overtaking the great Ricky Ponting who has scored 2,555 runs against India.
6000 runs in World Test Championship history
Joe Root is also getting close enough to another great achievement-he might be the first cricketer to reach 6,000 runs in the World Test Championship (WTC). But it cannot only be achieved in a single Test match. Root so far has scored 5,624 runs in the WTC and 376 will be required to surpass the record.
