Friends, many areas of India are already receiving good rains before the monsoon, but still the country's capital Delhi is waiting for relief from the scorching heat and humidity. Despite constant forecasts and the presence of clouds, the national capital has barely received any significant rainfall. Interestingly, neighboring areas like Haryana and parts of western Uttar Pradesh are receiving thunderstorms and moderate rainfall. Let's know the complete weather condition-
Monsoon clouds are hovering over Delhi, but the rain remains light and erratic.
Thunderstorms and good rainfall are being recorded in the adjoining areas just north of Delhi.
The humidity level is very high, making the weather uncomfortable for the residents.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) is constantly issuing rain warnings, but Delhiites are still waiting for the actual rain.
Why is it not raining in Delhi?
Lack of convective activity:
Clouds are present, but they are not rising to heights high enough to activate strong rain-bearing systems. This lack of vertical cloud development is known as weak convective activity.
Orographic disadvantage:
Delhi is landlocked, unlike coastal cities that directly benefit from moisture-laden monsoon winds. This makes the arrival and intensity of monsoon rains more dependent on specific atmospheric triggers.
Wind patterns suppressing rainfall:
A cyclonic circulation and associated semi-southwesterly winds over northwest India are suppressing rainfall in Delhi, while more favorable conditions prevail over adjacent regions.
Presence of southwesterly monsoon winds carrying moisture from the ocean.
Outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) should fall below 200 W/m², indicating persistent cloudiness and convection.
Favourable wind speed and direction:
At 850 hPa level, the winds should be easterly or south-westerly, blowing steadily at a speed of 15-20 knots.
The wind direction and speed should remain constant to support the progress of monsoon.
Humidity and local pressure systems:
The relative humidity should be more than 60% at 700 hPa level.
The presence of low pressure systems or cyclonic circulations further aids rainfall.
When can rain be expected in Delhi?
According to forecasts, conditions may improve in the coming days with the development of local and regional systems.
