New Delhi: The Government of India has introduced a significant update to the Sugamya Bharat App, making it more usable and more useful in advancing the cause of accessibility to persons with disabilities (divyangjan) and older citizens. The app has been developed by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, and it has a more logical interface and a number of user-focused features.

The application was introduced in 2021 and is one of the main digital resources to report about the issues regarding accessibility in public places, transport infrastructure, and online services. It is in this new overhaul that the government wants to simplify the usage of the app and make it more user-friendly to its needs, in line with its larger goal of a barrier-free India.

Key features of the revamped app

The new Sugamya Bharat App has an easy-to-use interface with a simplified design to ensure that every user can navigate the app easily. Among the most notable enhancements, an AI-based chatbot that helps users in real-time should be mentioned. This virtual assistant is used to instantly respond and give directions about government programmes, schemes and services that persons with disabilities can avail of.

The app enables the user to post geo-tagged photos of places that have poor accessibility. This will aid in detection of issues and quick response by the officials. By 25 June 2025, 2,705 complaints had been received in the app, of which 1,897 have been settled, indicating the active work of the government.

Growing adoption and accessibility outreach

The app has registered 14,358 users and 83,791 total downloads: 82,291 Android and 1,500 iOS. The Sugamya Bharat App is listed in the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, which means that it can be easily accessed by the citizens of the country.

DEPwD encourages citizens to take their responsibility of reporting accessibility barriers and promoting the values of inclusive development. The Sugamya Bharat App will enhance its operations in making India more accessible and inclusive through these updates.
