Tragic Toll from Flash Floods in Himachal Pradesh
Dharamshala: The devastating flash floods caused by multiple cloudbursts in Himachal Pradesh have resulted in a rising death toll, now at seven. On the morning of June 27, 2025, rescue teams discovered another body in the Manuni Khud area of Khaniyara, close to Dharamshala.
This individual was among nine workers who went missing after a private hydropower project site in Sokani Da Kot was submerged during a cloudburst on Wednesday.
With this latest recovery, five bodies have been located in the Khaniyara region, while three workers are still unaccounted for. One worker was rescued alive on Thursday, and four bodies were recovered that same day despite challenging conditions. A large-scale search operation is currently in progress, involving over 50 personnel from various agencies, including the NDRF, SDRF, local police, and volunteers.
Search Operations and Priorities
Kangra ADM Shilpi Bekta emphasized that finding the remaining missing workers is the highest priority. "We are dedicated to continuing the operation until we locate all individuals," she stated. Additionally, a Home Guard team has been deployed to assist in the search efforts.
Widespread Damage Across the Region
The flash floods have caused extensive destruction beyond Dharamshala, particularly in Kullu, where a family of three—72-year-old Nand Lal, his 15-year-old daughter Murti Devi, and his 67-year-old sister Yan Dasi—are missing after being swept away in the Jeeva Nullah during a cloudburst.
Reports also suggest that another individual may have been carried away by the Tirthan River. In Mandi district, a body was found near Jalpa Temple in Dharampur, bringing the total death toll across the state to seven. Numerous others have been rescued or are still being searched for as rivers and streams continue to swell.
Weather Alerts and Continued Rainfall
The Shimla Meteorological Centre has issued new weather warnings for the upcoming days. An orange alert for heavy rainfall has been announced for June 29, while a yellow alert is in effect for June 27, 28, and from July 1 to 3. Significant rainfall has been recorded over the past 24 hours, with Pandoh receiving 139 mm and Jogindernagar 73 mm, among other areas experiencing heavy showers. A drop in temperatures by 2–3°C is anticipated in the next few days.
