Political Reactions to Emergency Comments

In response to comments made by Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, former Chief Minister and Congress leader Ashok Gehlot remarked that Congress leaders have publicly acknowledged mistakes regarding the Emergency period, expressing regret. He noted that he, too, had been imprisoned in support of Indira Gandhi. Gehlot pointed out that Bhajanlal is new to his role as Chief Minister and first-time legislator, suggesting that he lacks comprehensive information, which leads to such statements. He added that Bhajanlal, being a devotional singer, might not be fully aware of various issues.

Counterarguments from Deputy Chief Minister

In light of Gehlot's comments, Rajasthan's Deputy Chief Minister, Prem Chand Baidawat, responded, stating, "Your party engaged in power games for five years. Why do you see that in our party now? The BJP remains united. If you wish to offer advice for the public's benefit, you are welcome to do so." Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma had previously labeled the Emergency as a 'black mark' on the democratic history of India, accusing Congress of compromising national interests for power. During an event at the Constitution Club to mark the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, he stated that the midnight imposition of the Emergency on June 25, 1975, was a dark chapter in the nation's democratic journey.

Historical Context of the Emergency

Sharma elaborated that during this period, the then-government enforced undemocratic laws such as the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) and the Defence of India Rules (DIR), which suppressed freedom of expression, press freedom, and fundamental rights. He emphasized that those who fought for democracy endured severe hardships in prisons to uphold constitutional values. He also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking significant steps to strengthen democracy and the Constitution, including the initiation of Constitution Day celebrations on November 26 and honoring Babasaheb Ambedkar by designating places related to his life as Panchteerth. Furthermore, he noted that the central government, which they support, conferred the Bharat Ratna upon Ambedkar.
