Josh Hazlewood Blasts Brandon King Stumps: The WI vs AUS 1st Test in Barbados continues on the road to becoming a short Test match as the Australian pacers hit the hosts’ batters hard after the visitors themselves were bowled out for only 180.
14 wickets fell on day 1 of the WI vs AUS Test at the Kensington Oval. Australia, who are without the injured Steve Smith while Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped, elected to bat first after winning the toss.
The hosts’ pacers ran riot through the Australian batting line-up, barring an 89-run stand between Usman Khawaja and Travis Head, to bundle the visitors out for less than 200. Jayden Seales took five wickets, and Shamar Joseph, West Indies’ hero of that famous Gabba victory against Australia, took four wickets, while one wicket fell to Justin Greaves.
In reply, though, West Indies batsmen too succumbed to the pace trio of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Hazlewood, losing four wickets before close on day 1.
Day 2 began on a promising note for the West Indies as Brandon King, on debut, and Roston Chase, the new Test captain, played a few crisp drives and flicks to earn some tough runs. However, a misjudgment on the part of King against Hazlewood cost him his wicket.
Hazlewood bowled a few outswingers and away nippers to set up King for a delivery that came in. The debutant shouldered his arms to a delivery that pitched on good length just outside the off-stump and seamed into him. The ball clattered into the stumps, and Hazlewood had his first wicket of the morning of day 2 and his second in the innings, having dismissed nightwatchman Jomel Warrican on day 1.
