5-time Grand Slam champ Iga Swiatek reaches first WTA Tour grass-court final

New Delhi: Five-time Grand Slam champions Iga Swiatek reached her first WTA Tour grass-court final with a dominating win over Jasmine Paolini at Bad Homburg. The star Polish player, who happens to be a junior champions at Wimbledon, beat the Wimbledon runner-up Italian tennis star 6-1, 6-3 in a clash that turned to be one-sided.

Swiatek reached the quarterfinals of the prestigious Wimbledon back in 2023 and has failed to go beyond the fourth round in any of her appearances there till now. The Polish tennis star has made a total of four appearances at the Grand Slam. Meanwhile, the former world number one has won 12 titles on hard courts and 10 on the clay.

Swiatek’s first win against a top-10 player in grass

The win over world number five Paolini is also Swiatek’s first over a top-10 player on the grass. The 24-year-old tennis sensation said that she was happy and super excited to get this win and she just focused on doing her job. Additionally, she also mentioned that she was not expecting a win.

‘I am super happy, I was not expecting this. I just did my job, knew what I wanted to play and I went for it,’ said Swiatek.

With Wimbledon beginning on Monday, June 30, she will have a tough final to face in Saturday, June 28, against top seeded player Jessica Pegula of America. Pegula, earlier, fought back to beat Czech Linda Noskova 6-7, 7-5, 6-1 in an interesting battle.

Swiatek becomes the first player born in the 2000s, man or woman, to reach 50 career top 10 wins. The final clash will serve as a perfect tune up to the Wimbledon. Swiatek,  will face Russian Polina Kudermetova in her Wimbledon 2025 opener.
