Wayne Rooney has turned down an offer to manage Macclesfield, according to the PA news agency. The non-league club had made an ambitious approach to the former Manchester United and England star as Robbie Savage is believed to be close to taking over at Forest Green.

Macclesfield reached out to Rooney's agent, Paul Stretford, earlier this week, but after careful thought, the 39-year-old has decided not to make himself available for the position. Rooney, who is United's all-time top scorer, has previously managed Derby, DC United and Birmingham following his retirement from playing, and was in charge of Plymouth for the first half of last season.

It is understood that Rooney is currently focusing on media opportunities and did not consider a move to Macclesfield to be the right decision at this time, despite his respect for the work being done at the club.

Macclesfield, which was founded in October 2020 after Macclesfield Town were wound up, has seen a rapid rise through the leagues under chairman Robert Smethurst.

The Silkmen began their journey in the North West Counties Football League Premier Division in the 2021/22 season and were promoted as Northern Premier League Premier Division champions under boss Savage last season.
