Disturbing Discoveries at Anand Niketan Old Age Ashram
A recent inspection by the social welfare team revealed alarming conditions at the Anand Niketan Old Age Ashram located in Sector 55, Noida. Officials were horrified to find an elderly woman restrained with her hands and feet tied. Following this shocking discovery, a team from Lucknow took immediate action. Upon revisiting the site on Friday, the team found the ashram operating without the necessary permissions. In total, 39 elderly residents were relocated from the facility.
A formal notice has been issued to the director of the ashram, demanding an explanation regarding the situation. The director has faced reprimands due to the distressing conditions observed. The discovery of the woman in such a restrained state raises concerns about the treatment of other residents as well.
Lack of Action Despite Complaints
Former journalist Yash Jain has repeatedly raised concerns about the conditions at the old age home, but management failed to address these complaints. Had the authorities acted on these issues earlier, the distressing video of the elderly woman would not have gained widespread attention.
The Social Welfare Department has issued a warning to the director, stating that if the conditions within the ashram are not improved within a month, the facility will be shut down. Three elderly individuals have already been rescued and moved to Dadri.
Investigation Reveals Inhumane Treatment
The Social Welfare Department is currently reviewing the documentation of the old age home. Evidence suggests that the residents were subjected to mistreatment. The State Women’s Commission took notice of the situation after a video surfaced showing the elderly woman in distress.
A team from the Commission traveled directly from Lucknow to Noida to rescue the woman. Investigations revealed that staff members had been threatened and coerced into silence regarding the treatment of the residents.
Allegations of Drug Abuse and Neglect
Upon investigation, the State Women’s Commission team discovered that the elderly residents were subjected to inhumane treatment, including being drugged and held against their will. They were deprived of basic necessities, including proper clothing and bedding, often forced to sleep on the floor. Officials from the relevant department have been instructed to take stringent measures against those responsible.
