New Delhi: Kolkata Knight Riders playoff hopes ended following a narrow two-wicket loss to Chennai Super Kings at Eden Gardens. The defeat highlighted the teams inconsistent performance from key players. Despite retaining six players and appointing Ajinkya Rahane as captain the strategy proved unsuccessful. Rahanes leadership was criticized with observations of frustration and anger during games. This year the team has a record of five wins and six losses with one match resulting in a rain-affected tie awarding both teams a single point. Ajinkya Rahanes captaincy for the five-time champions faced criticism due to inconsistent batting strike rates and perceived inability to maximize player performance. Harbhajan Singh attributed the franchises unsuccessful season to Rahanes leadership. “Ajinkya Rahane was the problem as he made too many mistakes. He gave an over to Moeen Ali in front of Riyan Parag who hit him for four runs in an over. In the game against CSK the ball was handed to Vaibhav Arora against Dewald Brevis who struck him for 30 runs. Rahane should have spoken to him but he didn’t” he said. “Rahane is too nice a guy but you need a captain who is strong to tell the players that they are doing wrong. Captaincy was not up to the mark. KKR had everything to play for against CSK but they lost everything” he added.
