Government Takes Precautionary Measures
In light of escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, the central government has declared a high alert for Himachal Pradesh and has temporarily halted all flights from the state's airports until May 15. This advisory impacts domestic air travel, resulting in the cancellation of all scheduled flights to and from the airports in Kangra, Kullu, and Shimla.
Flight Operations Suspended
IndiGo Airlines has confirmed the suspension of flights to and from Dharamshala (Kangra) until May 15, as per the latest government directives. This action is part of a larger precautionary initiative known as Operation Sindoor, which has led to the temporary closure of 25 airports nationwide, including those in Himachal Pradesh.
Impact on Tourism
Although Himachal Pradesh does not have any international airports, its three domestic terminals—Jubbarhatti (Shimla), Bhuntar (Kullu), and Gaggal (Kangra)—are vital for connecting the region with major northern cities. The suspension of flights is beginning to affect tourism, particularly as summer vacations approach.
Details on Flight Operations
Typically, flights from Delhi, Amritsar, Dehradun, Jaipur, and Chandigarh operate to these airports. For example, Bhuntar airport in Kullu usually manages around three daily flights, primarily small ATR aircraft, accommodating approximately 80 to 90 passengers each day. Shimla airport receives one small aircraft from Delhi daily, transporting around 40 passengers, along with several connecting flights to Dharamshala and Amritsar each week.
Gaggal Airport Affected
Gaggal airport in Kangra also experiences flights from Delhi, Chandigarh, and Shimla, but all operations there are currently suspended, disrupting air connectivity in the area. While road transport remains the main travel option within Himachal, the absence of air service poses a significant challenge for travelers on tight schedules. Officials have urged the public and travelers to stay calm and adhere to security protocols, emphasizing the importance of avoiding misinformation and relying solely on verified government communications.
