A major UK has confirmed that it will be of its stores in the coming few weeks. The first store will be closing next month, with the second pulling down the shutters in July.

has announced that its supermarket store in Margate will close for good on June 21. The frozen food retailer - which has around 900 stores across the UK - has been in the site in College Square for the last decade.

The reason for the closure has not been confirmed, however, Iceland has said that staff working at the store have been offered jobs in other areas of the business.

On the closure, a spokesperson said: "We can confirm our Margate Iceland store will close. Our store colleagues have entered into a consultation process and have been offered opportunities at surrounding stores where possible."

The discount supermarket will also be closing its Inverness city centre supermarket at Rose Street Retail Park on July 12. According to The, the decision to close the store comes as Iceland concentrates on expanding its Food Warehouse outlets. This includes its Food Warehouse site in Telford, which first opened in November 2022.

An Iceland spokeswoman said: “We can confirm our Iceland store located at Rose Street, Inverness, is scheduled to close on July, 12. Our store colleagues will enter into a consultation process and will be offered opportunities at surrounding stores where possible.

“Shoppers can visit our local Food Warehouse store in Inverness located on Telford Street, IV3 5LU.”

It's important to note that retailers and close stores for a variety of reasons, and it doesn't just mean they are in trouble. Some close because the tenancy has come to an end on the site, or that the branch is not as profitable as others.

The supermarket chain has recently launched a brand new money-saving scheme which gives customers 10% off their food shop throughout the month of May.

The initiative offers students the discount each Wednesday through May. This means students across the country who do their food shop at Iceland or the Food Warehouse will get money off if they pop into stores on:

  • Wednesday, May 7
  • Wednesday, May 14
  • Wednesday, May 21
  • Wednesday, May 28

To get the discount, students will need to show shop workers a valid student ID. There is no minimum spend required for the discount, and sadly, you can only claim it for in-store shops - you cannot claim it for online orders.
